by Daniel Schnitzer On October 19, 2010, the Haitian Ministry of Public Works held a small conference to develop consensus on policy and strategy for a national energy sector development plan. EarthSpark’s Co-Founder and Executive Director Dan Schnitzer was asked by the Ministry to moderate the Rural and Renewable Energy Policy breakout session. Dan gave a presentation on the need for sustainable energy in Haiti, and potential policies and strategies for increasing the availability of clean energy technology to Haiti’s entire population. The session was attended by a group that included members of the Haitian and international business community, multilateral institutions, the US and Haitian Government, and NGOs. Following the presentation, Dan moderated a lively discussion about potential solutions for rural and renewable energy in Haiti. The group agreed on a progressive set of policies and strategies, which it assembled into a brief “roadmap” document that was submitted to the Ministry of Public Works. The Ministry is in the process of developing a full energy sector development plan with each of the breakout session roadmaps as a foundation. EarthSpark will continue to be engaged in both the planning and implementation of Haiti’s new energy future.
