EarthSpark Advisory Services Support Launch of South Sudan's 1st Solar Microgrid

Picture
EarthSpark has been supporting SunGate Solar, a pioneering solar developer in South Sudan, to develop solar microgrids and electric cooking in South Sudan since 2021. EarthSpark helped SunGate develop their initial grant proposals for the Humanitarian Grand Challenges and has supported SunGate over the last two years to develop a solar microgrid business by providing a variety of advisory services supporting technical microgrid design and operations, capacity building, data reporting and analysis, reporting, communications, research, and fundraising.

In addition to the remote support, EarthSpark team members spent 7 months in South Sudan working alongside SunGate to support the actual building and commissioning of the country's first community-scale solar microgrid.

The results : The Wanyjok microgrid now serves nearly 200 connections with reliable, 24/7 electricity and delivers street lighting throughout town. SunGate has received its largest investment to-date, and SunGate is actively planning the development of additional micro and metro-scale grids.
"Three years ago, when SunGate Solar decided to expand its operations in South Sudan to include solar microgrids, we had little experience in the space, but with EarthSpark we had a company on our side with the technical know-how and rich experience we could rely on.

"Their attention to detail, flexibility, and thoughtful organized approach helped to develop our microgrid project and guide our team every step of the way.

"During the project, their staff became part of the SunGate family, living and working side by side with us in some of the remotest parts of South Sudan to ensure the project's success. We can’t overstate how much we value our continuing partnership with the EarthSpark team."

In 2023, EarthSpark was honored to join the Puerto Rico community of energy advocates, supporting Abeyno Coop and other partners in addressing local energy needs.

Working with Solar United Neighbors, Abeyno Coop, The Municipality of Bayamón, The Puerto Rico Green Energy Trust, and many others in the rich landscape of Puerto Rican advocates and practitioners, EarthSpark is both learning from the Puerto Rican community and sharing our learnings from Haiti, South Sudan, and the other geographies where EarthSpark's team is now advising energy innovators on community-based energy prosperity.

“Working with the EarthSpark team has been an extraordinary experience for Abeyno Coop and the La Margarita community. From the beginning, EarthSpark has treated our community not simply as beneficiaries, but as partners in building our own energy future.

Their technical expertise, commitment, and respect for community leadership have helped us demonstrate that residents can be more than energy consumers—we can be prosumers,
producing and managing our own clean energy while building resilience, creating local economic opportunities, and keeping more of our energy dollars within the community.

EarthSpark has believed in our vision and worked alongside us to turn that vision into something real.”
